The telegram camed and she phoned Mr. Cobbs and he asked about a young lady. There is a misunderstanding about money and rhis lady. Anna continues abou the momney and Mr. Cobbs. She refers to Mollie Gilman and her telegram enclosed. Letter is unsigned.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
